This wood chipper is so powerful and does an amazing job in chipping branches up to 4 inches. It is sheer joy to work with it. I highly recommend to anyone contemplating a wood chipper.
The first unit I received broke. Something in the engine broke after about 1/2 hours use. I returned it to Home Depot no problem. They ordered another unit and it works great. Very powerful 15 horsepower engine. I had an 8 horsepower chipper for around 30 years and always wanted more power. Also on this new unit the belt drive system helps protect the crankshaft from breaking because it's not directly connected to the impeller. So far I'm happy with this purchase.
After just a couple of uses I am totally satisfied with this DEK machine. It rolled through my large piles of tree-trimmings and branches - many up to 3" thick (anything bigger is firewood). It's light enough to manuever around the yard without the tow bar, and solid enough to stay put once positioned. The noise level wasn't too bad either. My only wish is that it had a blower function to allow the mulch to expel from the machine rather than dump at its feet. But overall, I am very satisfied. This is a great chipper. Well worth the cost.
Works just as advertised. Good choice
I am well pleased with with this chipper. Was concerned about quality buying sight unseen but that was unfounded. Quality is good assembly was no problem. We used the chipper for four hours or more and was well please with how little gas it used in that time no even a full tank. Engine started on first pull after adding the gas and oil. Now for the reason you buy a chipper shredder it easily shredder everything we put in it. I had some dead black locust and even the chain saw takes time to work thru a 4" piece but the DEK chewed it up and spit it out. On the side of the hopper it says you can feed up to 3/4" sticks in to it, and yes you can but I would not recommend it because when it gets a hold of the branch or stick it jerks it in violently, it much better feed into the chipper and does a nicer job chipping sticks then shredding them. We learned to trim of side branches and if you can compress the lumber with branches down to 4" and feed into the chipper it's a Time saver, we were feeding in branches over 10' long. It is a big purchase but I believe you do get what you paid for with DEK chipper.
At unboxing I was impressed that they supplied tools (even a funnel to help with the oil fill), safety gear, and spares (blade, bolts, and belt). It made me feel like the company cared, not just trying to checkbox match the competition. The belt and blade is very easy to change.
Quality Was quite sturdy, and after 9 mos of moderate use I can say it is durable.
Use - My primary use is small, medium, and large palm frons up to 4"" dia, but I do regularly mulch sticks smaller than 1"". I have to admit that it didn't match my needs perfectly, but since there are such diverse uses by customers I think you have to expect that for any mulcher.
The grate thay keeps debris from coming out until mulched was too tight for me. I would have to work slowly, and you end up with very small peices, like if you want to make compost.. I opened every other hole and that worked well for me.
The leaf funnel is useless if you follow instructions. The leaves just bunch up in the funnel. It would be nice to have some kind of plunger. I used the funnel for smaller sticks and small palm frons. If I have leaves I push them through with small frons.
The mulcher works very well. After a few months of use, I do find that it often takes the smaller softer palm frons and drags the center through without cutting it. I'm not sure why.
I don't use the bag or shute because it just clogs up. I have to keep clearing it.
Power - the engine never struggled at all.
After 9 mos with no issues, the clutch housing broke. I called the service company and they promised I would have the part at my door in around a week. I found that a very positive experience.
Ok. So one weekend to using this chipper. Have about 6 ours of use so far. Overall...I give a a very positive grade. It definitely eats through 4 in branches with NO problems. Starts on one or 2 pulls. Performs very well. That being said, a couple constructive dings on this unit. The the top chute. It says, "LEAVES ONLY". I have not used it yet, since I have NO desire to mulch leaves. However, I DO have a need to chip up the small twigs and branches left over from chipping up the bigger 4in branches. I would love to just dump in these small twigs into this chute, but I guess no can do. Leave only....really?? Useless to me. So here, is the BIGGEST complaint I have. The chute where you put in the the branches is very cumbersome and restrictive. I had an older chipper and the chute opening was much wider and it was nice to insert a cluster of small branches and let it funnel down to the chipper. NOT so with this one. The entry point is only 4 inchces wide and inserting branches that are not "perfectly" straight is problematic. I found myself fighting with inserting branches...taking them out....bending down, getting my hand clipper, clipping a branch off...reinserting it, etc. VERY frustrating. So much I am tempted to drill off the protective plate. Not all branches are perfectly straight DEK, come on! Great performer overall, need to let me chip up some small debris and wide the main chute!
This is a high quality tool, very sturdy. Easy to assemble, and the electric starter is wonderful. Easily handles thick branches. The only reservations I have concern the instructions for use and maintenance. They are not detailed enough for a complete novice such as myself--they assume a certain level of knowledge. The pictures are in black and white, too small and too few, with too little detail. I did eventually figure things out, and running it is very easy. However, I'm not sure about the maintenance schedule. The tasks are clear, but there is no information on how to do them. I really don't know how to maintain a small engine, and would have appreciated more detailed information.
The power and convenance of the chipper shredder is excalent certantley well worth the price!
Very easy to assemble and then WOW can this thing chew up brush and branches. Love my new toy.
I looked at a couple others, harbor freight - granger- and this is the best I could find for the money... Your mostly buying an engine when it comes to tiller, chipper, exs. So it is a gamble if the rest of it is sound. Stated before the chipper feeding chute, has a rubber gard, and didn't last much longer than 3 hours for me- but that means nothing to me.. cosmetic. It doesn't affect its function. I ran dead and alive cherry trees, pine, poppler, and some small brush through the shredder. All the trees anywhere from the size of your thumb and as big as it'll take. Wich is about 3x4. The engine is built. Never slow chipping but I did get a little excited and over feed the shredder. But just give it a sec. And it'll pick back up. But I will suggest gloves and safety glasses as a... I know I should.
Unit performed as expected but should have had a caution about the violent way the flails snatch the small brush and leaves out of your hand when loaded into the funnel. Heavier gloves are needed to handle the material to be chipped because of the vibration and sudden movement in chute.
