I read many reviews of many different machines, compared prices and features. I decided to buy this. I have 2 acres in a heavily wooded area and this machine has taken piles of oak, hickory, pine and maple branches and twigs and turned it into tiny mulch. We also found that we could feed the roots and small sticks (up to an inch thick) into the top feeder as long as we didn't overload it. We have named our machine "JAWS" and all the family likes using it. As advertised it usually starts on the first or second pull. The big thing is listen to the engine "load" and try to keep it running at maximum RPM's. Our ranch and natural areas are really looking better thanks to Jaws!
I bought a home with a lot of brush that needed tending to, this machine takes everything I put into it and turns it into a perfect mulch for spreading along a fence line or under trees and other places that I want a border for mowing. I'm very happy with it and with the way that it is made
This item arrived on a pallet and well packaged. It was easy to assemble, fill with oil (included) and gas. I wheeled it out to the garden and adjusted the discharge chute. It started on the second pull with no choke. I ran it for nearly 4 hours and fed it everything from dry cedar to green birch limbs, garden waste and leaves. Never bogged down and ran like a champ. Ran it out of fuel but was done for the day. Second use filled it up and it started with the choke on first pull! Very hardy platform. Blade and hammers are thick, construction of the unit overall is very sturdy. I like the draw bar and pneumatic tires. They make it easy to either move or tow. I have not tried the collection bag but it looks good enough to me. I highly recommend this chipper. It has a lot of high end features (high horsepower engine, air filled tires, belt driven, and seperate hammers and cutting blades. Well painted and well engineered.
I researched and agonized over which chipper to buy for use on my 1 acre lot. I have lots of cedar and birch that shed branches all the time, and needed a way to convet them to mulch vs paying haul fees. Assembly was minimal and once oiled and gassed, it started easily on second pull. Runs strong. Belt drive is handy. Wet leaves bogged it down because I fed it too fast. If a branch fits, it will be shredded! Used it to grind up end of year garden plants debris too. Discharge not a problem for me and I have not tried the collection bag yet. I was able to use the shredded limbs and branches for mulch. Very heavily built. You can push it around but it's heavy. Tires are large pneumatic type that make it a bit easier. The closest machines for comparison that I found are the DEK powered units at Northern which sell for hundreds more. This 11hp DEK unit is more than enough for grinding ...
The only problem I've experienced so far is that the rubber blow-back protection piece on the 3" chute has already had two pieces torn off. With the plate which holds it in place riveted on, there is no way to replace it.
Picked this up at the store today--fit in the back of grand cherokee. Got 10% off using a coupon from a competitor-- Home Depot honored the coupon without question. I got it home, filled the oil and the gas and started it right up. It ran almost nonstop for over 6 hours without a problem. I was able to get rid of about a dumptruck full of tree branches and limbs by myself without much trouble. As long as the wood can fit in the chute this thing will have no problem chopping it up, and it chips the wood to not much bigger than sawdust size pieces. I was considering getting the 14 hp model, but I'm glad I didn't because this 11 hp model did everthing I needed it to do.
This is my first experience with a chipper. I am very impressed with the completeness of the product (included eye and ear protection and all tools needed for minor assembly and maintenence!).
Very powerful and handled everything I threw at it.
Wood chippers require a good compilation of quality parts to function well and long. This machine, the "Brush Master 11 HP Commercial Duty Chipper Shredder", has just that. Knowing that the vibration would be severe, the manufacturer included needed locking steel/nylon nuts for every bolt on the machine. When torqued appropriately, nothing will fall off or vibrate loose. Additionally, the drive from the engine to hopper is via belt, rather than direct, which protects the engine from the "violence" and vibration created by the 16 rotating hammers and hardened steel blade chewing through whatever wood it is fed. The heart of the machine is the DEK 11 hp engine. It is the same size, 401 cc, as the 14 hp, just slightly down-rated in horsepower to 11, making it under-stressed. It has electronic ignition and a fine screen filter for its fuel tank - both very much appreciated. It comes with ear protector, eye protection, extra blade and belt, AND its own tools for the little assembly needed. Though rated "commercial", it easily fills the bill for anyone that has a back yard or field filled with trees, saplings, or fast growing brush. For the money, the very best choice available.
These are my early comments regarding the operation, performance, design, and durability of the Brush Master CH3. I have used the unit only a few days so far (about 6-7 hours of operation) but am VERY PLEASED except as noted below. It is a little premature for a comprehensive evaluation. I have used another manufacturer’s chipper/shredder (5.5 HP, 3” capacity) for over five years and have spent almost as much on repairs and replacement parts for that unit as the original price. I am optimistic that this unit will prove much more durable, as it seems to be of superior design, materials, and construction. The one negative, as noted by others is the nearly worthless bag, but the low velocity out of the discharge chute makes it easy to just let it pile up next to the unit.
I recieved my chipper within a week of purchase, which I was very pleased with, as I needed it very badly. This product has all the features I was looking for at a great price! In terms of performance, this unit exceeded my expectations greatly!!!! It's very durable and I'm impressed with the quality of the machine. They really did well when they decided to call it "brush MASTER"!!!
This chipper has the guts to chip up much more than the 3 inch size limit imposed by the feeder. It is loud but with ear protection, the noise is bearable. It doesn't bog down under heavy continuous use very easily. I like the fact that the engine is isolated from the chipping mechanism via a drivebelt which dampens vibrations and excludes the engine from being stopped abruptly. The one negative feature I have found so far is the oil drain plug is mounted too close to the base of the platform the engine is bolted to, only allowing an open end wrench to access the bolt and getting it off the first time is a bugger. Overall, great machine.
I just spent three days with this machine doing all the trimming of my brush trees that I have been putting off for over a year because of the size of the project.( trees just kept getting bigger and bigger ) The only complaint I have with the machine is the discharge system. The bag is way to small to be used for anything but a hand full of leaves and when running it in straight discharge it didn't throw the chips out far enough so I had to continually rake the pile away from the discharge chute to keep from backing up the machine. In all I made about 5 yrds of mulch and it was just perfect size
for the garden. The machine handled everything I threw at it and didn't even break a sweat. If it weren't for the discharge issues I would give it a solid FIVE STAR rating.
